  • First calving and first lactation should be at early age
  • More production per lactation
  • less calving interval
  • Short dry period
  • Short service period
  • Less feed intake and more production
  • In the world, there are more than 800 cattle breeds. Which produce Milk But all cattle breeds’ not good producers of milk. Some breed is increased for milk production.

Sahiwal

  • Sahiwal cattle live in parts of districts Sahiwal in Punjab. The breed is named after Sahiwal district, which is part of its home tract
  • medium-sized, and has a fleshy body
  • reddish dun colour
  • Milk yield is 1500-2200 litres per lactation
  • fat content of 4.5 %
  • lactation length is 235 days
  • first calving is 45 months
  • Dry period is 205 days
  • Gestation period is 285 days
  • Service period is 155 days

Red Sindhi

  • The Red Sindhi breed originates from a mountainous region called `Mahal Kohistan‘districts in Sindh.
  • Medium-sized breed , red body colour
  • Milk yield per lactation 1200 to 2000 litres
  • Weight 300-350 kg
  • lactation length is 265 days
  • First calving is 45 months
  • Service Period is 210 days
  • Dry period is 230 days
  • Calving interval is 495 days

Holstein Friesian

  • Holstein Frisian is one of the high yielder dairy cows. These cows are usually used for high milk production purpose in Dairy farms.
  • Average it gives 25 liter of milk per day

  • Weight 350-450 kg
  • First calving is 26 months
  • Dry period is 65 days
  • Calving interval is 365 days

Jersey

  • Small breed of dairy cattle, Originally bred in the Channel Island of jersey
  • Famous for high butterfat content of its milk and lower maintenance costs attending its lower body weight
  • light gray to a very dark fawn or a shade that is almost black
  • 400–500 kilograms weight
  • 84% butterfat and 3.95% protein
  • Age at first calving : 26-30 months
  • Milk yield – 3000-4000 kg
  • Jersey yield 15 litres/day

Indian Gir

  • Mainly found in Gir forest area of South Kathiawar, Gujarat
  • Milk Yield 1600 to 2400 kg
  • fat content of 4.5 %
  • lactation length is 235 days
  • first calving is 45 months
  • Dry period is 205 days
  • Gestation period is 285 days
  • Service period is 155 days

Buffalo – Murrah

  • Mainly found in Haryana, Punjab and Delhi
  • Milk production – 1700 to 2000 kg on an average
  • The daily milk yield is found 9 to 12 kg per day.
  • Cross breed Murrah buffalo gives 6 to 8 kg per day.

Buffalo – Jafrabadi

  • Found in Kathiawar district of Gujarat
  • Milk Yield – 1500 to 2000 kg
  • The daily milk yield is found 9 to 12 kg per day
  • Cross breed buffalo gives 6 to 8 kg per day.
